Being YOUR Best Self
Recently my friend, a fabulous therapist in Boston, posted something on her instagram and asked the question "if it weren't for social media, would you still do it?" Man, that question stopped me in my tracks. It has had me thinking every since.
How many things have I wanted to buy or do because the idea came from someone who had it or done it and posted a beautiful picture of it on instagram? How many experience have I had simply to take a picture of it and post it? How often have I gone out of my way to curate a beautiful picture? How many moments have I actually missed because I was consumed with social media instead of being present in my life?
There are pros and cons to social media. I love the fact that I can keep in touch with friends all over the place. I love being exposed to places, people, and cultures from around the world. I hate the fact that it removes us from authenticity. I don't like the comparison and anxiety it brings from striving to keep up. I despise that our humanity is removed and people feel like they can be cruel to others.
Think about it, how many times have you done something for the sake of or as a result of social media?
A personal goal of mine is to spend less time on my phone and more time experiencing life. When I reflect on the times that have brought me the most joy; it's those where I did things purely for me. I have the best time, am my happiest, and my best self when I stay true to myself.
We are all made unique. That is what makes us special. I have different interests and talents than that girl that may look like she has it all on social media. I don't need my life to be like hers, or anyone else's for that matter. I was made me for a purpose. While I may not always know what that purpose is, I definitely will not find it trying to live like someone else.
This year, let's focus on the things that truly matter. Do the things that bring you joy. Even if no one else seems to be doing it. Be brave. Try something new. Live out your life and your purpose. For you. Not for social media. Eliminate distractions. Get back to the simple things. Explore. Celebrate this adventure of life we get to live.

Fall Adventures
OMB Oktoberfest. Pumpkins. Corn Maze. Family dinners at fun restaurants. Renaissance Festival. All the fall things.
Fall is one of my favorite seasons. I think I love all the seasons for what they bring but there is something about fall. I start a new school year so it's full of fresh beginnings and inspiration for me. The crisp colorful weather doesn't hurt either. There is something about a gorgeous drive under Carolina blue skies and seeing colorful leaves.
This fall has been full of fun adventures. It has also been a strange one for me. Charlotte has gotten hit by multiple hurricanes, canceling school a bunch. I feel like I am still trying to get started in my school year and figure things out with a lot of change and it's almost time for the holidays!
One thing I am learning is life is about how you live it. I am choosing to not let my work define me and to truly live my life for the moments that bring me joy. Truly celebrating each day, being grateful for the things that we have, and finding ways to enjoy each season.

Summer in the Sunshine
Location: Lake Wylie & South End CLT
This summer has been everything. My goal this summer was to simply enjoy. I have done just that and it's not even over - I still have a month left until the school year starts up again. I have taken full advantage of the sunshine and being outside, it is giving me so much life.
I have been teaching swim lessons and babysitting for some extra cash. My schedule has been so great for me. I gave myself time to work a little, get things done around the apartment that has been put off for a while, plus living my life in the sun.
I have been biking, walking, boating, swimming, and reading - so much reading.
Summer is so good for my soul. I truly love the time to take care of myself. I have been enjoying slow mornings with coffee. Working out and reaching new goals. Vitamin D every single day. Long walks with the pup in the evenings. Reading new books after frequent visits to the library. Trying new things. Catching up with friends.
I love that I have been taking advantage of enjoying the summer. I felt today like I was ready to actually think about work and setting some new goals for the school year. But before I jump back to school mode I have fun exciting travel adventures to close out my summer - including one place I have never been before. Stay tuned.
Cheers to enjoying life, sunshine, and summertime.

Waterfall Wedding Weekend
Location: Lake Norman, NC & Carrigan Farms Rock Quary
The whole week up until the wedding it was gross and rainy and calling for a high chance of thunderstorms. Instead we got a gorgeously perfect day for an outdoor wedding by a waterfall. Everything couldn't have gone better.
We stayed on the lake in a house with the bridal party for the whole weekend for all of the fun festivities. We had a delicious girls brunch, got our nails done on Friday before the rehearsal dinner. Then Saturday was full of last minute touches, mimosas, and getting our hair and makeup done.
The wedding itself was so lovely. There were many tears but only because everyone was so happy. I have never seen a couple more perfect for each other than these two and I couldn't be more excited for them. After the ceremony we had the best dinner and then danced the night away, just like she wanted! It was such a special weekend.
Congrats to the bride and groom!!

Family Fun Filled Weekends
Great weekends are my thing. I love being productive and prepped for the week but I also love some really good fun time. Mike was joking with me the other day that I have every weekend planned out and if he wants to come up with something he needs to book it for August. Not exactly true, but I do love having something to look forward to so that I can be motivated and excited through the week.
This past weekend we had some good family time. One of my sisters came into town so we celebrated Mothers Day early with a delicious brunch. We also went to the annual crawfish boil that family friends of ours host.
It was a fun easy weekend. The weather was gorgeous out which always puts me in a good mood. Weekends with family time and fun activities sure do make my weeks better. I love that I had time to relax and catch up with my family.
What is something that you love to do which gets you through the week?

The Happiness List
Location: Whitewater Center, Charlotte, NC
As you know, I have recently been trying to find ways to live my life to the fullest and part of that means being a tourist in my own city to explore all that it has to offer. Recently, I heard a fitness blogger I follow talking about what she does to make her daily life and routines feel like it does while you are on vacation.
When we are on vacation our days move in a relaxed, care-free manner. The choices we make on vacation are all about having fun, trying new things and foods, as well as making decisions that bring us joy. So why can't we live our daily life that way?
In order to live daily life like you are on vacation that means changing our mindset about every day. Her idea was to create a happiness list of things that make you really happy and try to do a few of those every day so that you bring joy and relaxation into your routines. I thought it was such an incredible idea.
When we do things that we love we are staying true to our authentic selves.
Sometimes it is hard seeing other people living this seemingly happy life with all of their fancy things and opportunities. But other peoples lives are not our own. Instead of striving for happiness in what other people have or do, be your own person. Make your own happiness list and do something every day to honor your own happiness and live every day like you are on vacation.
Here is my happiness list:
- Journaling and reading the bible over a slow cup of coffee
- Taking care of my plants [one day I hope this will be full blown gardening]
- Reading a good book
- A long walk with the pup or a friend outside
- Working out
- Cooking a delicious meal
- Candles
- DIY spa evenings [nails, face masks, the works]
- Good conversations with people I love
- Finding a really good deal on fashion [although this one will add up if it happens daily so this one has a limit]
- Exploring a fun place and trying something new
- Hiking or any adventure outdoors
What are some things that make you happy?

It's Wedding Season
This year is definitely the year of weddings for me. I have three weddings on the calendar for this upcoming year, and one of them I am in the wedding party. I love weddings. They are a huge celebration of love and in that brings lots and lots of dancing! My favorite.
Recently, I have been focused on celebrating one of my besties. All of the events leading up to a wedding are so fun. Bachelorette weekends, showers, and planning the details of the wedding. One of my personal goals has been to be more intentional in my friendships. What a better way to focus on a friendship than being by a friends side during the most important days of their lives?
The best kind of friendships are the fierce lady friendships where you aggressively believe in each other, defend each other, and think the other deserves the world.
As I have gotten older my friendship circle has gotten a lot smaller, but that is okay with me. The friends that have stayed are the ones that I love dearly and who I can be myself completely when I am around them. Those are the friends that I am celebrating this year. I am so happy for friends who have found love and happiness. Can't wait to dance at all these weddings!

Birthday Brunch
Location: 300 East
Why is it that when a restaurant is featured on a food network show, that restaurant is instantly cooler? Back in February my family and I celebrated my Birthday by going out to brunch. We decided on a local restaurant close to me called 300 East. While looking up the menu before hand I found that it was featured on Diners Drive-Ins and Dives and instantly was more excited to go. I mean a local restaurant on TV?! How cool is that?!
The brunch was delicious as was the chocolate brownie [pictured above] Even more so than great food, I love getting together with loved ones for special occasions and celebrating. My love language is definitely brunch and quality time so this was a perfect way to spend my birthday!
What is your favorite birthday tradition?

Summer Goals Check In
Location: Outer Banks, North Carolina
One week from now I head back to work to start setting up my office as well as prepping for the school year to begin. This summer has been absolutely wonderful for me. I wrote a post before summer began about all the things that I wanted to do this season. A bucket list of sorts; you can read it all here.
Every once and a while I make a list of goals that I want to accomplish. Typically around new years when everyone reflects on what the year brought and the changes they can make for a better year ahead. I suppose this summer was my new year. Now that it is coming to an end I have looked back at my list, while I am pleased at all that I have done I had an aha moment.
While I was looking at all that I wanted to see and experience this summer I realized some things I wanted to do at the beginning of summer were simply forgotten about. I also realized that life happens. Sometimes we make the best plans, set goals, and then they don't happen. Instead of focusing on what hasn't happened life is about practicing gratitude for what actually happens.
So instead of looking back at my list, going through it and checking off what I did and didn't do. My check in with myself is answering one simple question. Am I relaxed and rejuvenated in spending my summer full of fun events and taking care of myself? My answer is most definitely; yes.
This last week will be spent loving life and summertime for a little while longer.
How has your summer been? What do your goals teach you about gratitude?

Happy August sweet friends,
August means back to school soon I have about 2 more weeks until my first workday. After that it will definitely be back to the grind and routines. I have a lot of goals for this school year though that I am excited to make happen. Plus, the kiddos always make my job worth it! Today, I am linking up with Anne and Shea to share a little more about what I am currently up to.

snacking (on): Lately because I have been all over the place with swim lessons my snacks have been on the go, I love bringing along things like RXbars for a protein fueled delicious snack with all clean healthy ingredients.
anticipating: The school year. There is always so much going on the first month of school. The hustle and bustle is something I thrive off of but I also want to find a good healthy balance this year with school and a personal life. No better way to start than jumping right in!
borrowing: Business wardrobe ideas from lots of fun bloggers I found on pinterest. We just moved and I did a huge purge of everything. In that purge I took a good look at my closet and realized I have a lot of holes needing to be filled. Step one get ideas for versatile business / work appropriate pieces before I head out shopping!
admiring: My new neighborhood of Charlotte and our view [pictured above] Although they are building another apartment right next door so eventually my city view will be blocked. I am soaking it all in while I can.
purchasing: Crossing my fingers that soon we will be purchasing a couch for the living room. I am saving up and making lists of all the home items that are still needed to truly make this apartment organized and homey. I am doing a good job of really being smart about my spending, doing my research first, instead of impulse buying something I'll will inevitably get rid of once I spring clean.

Home Decor + Patience & Self Control
Anyone else ever look on Pinterest or browse through home decor and organization ideas then just magically your house looks like that overnight? Yeah, me neither. Wouldn't that be wonderful - if you pin something it just appears without you actually having to pay for it haha. This one click wonder of a world full of instant gratification at your fingertips makes it feel like that could be your reality. We can like a picture on instagram and get all the shopping details for it sent to an app that you can shop directly from. So useful and dangerous all at the same time, because we actually have to make a purchase.
Our brains are tricked into thinking that I want it and want it now is the only way to go. Credit cards hold no consequences in the moment it seems. If our wants, which feel like needs, are not fufilled in a single moment then it eats at us and messes with our self worth.
On my editorial calendar for this month I wanted to show you all decor ideas and updates for this apartment. That's definitely not the case friends and you know what; it's totally okay. I am so happy with this apartment. Yes, we still have a long way to go. Organization puzzles to solve, some big purchases to make, and a couch would be nice so I am not hanging out in my living room on a beach chair anymore.
This apartment, for me, is different than all of my other moves I have made in the past. With those places I wanted it to be perfectly decorated within a week of move in. I used a lot of decor items that I have collected throughout the years. In this place though looking at them all together it just feels so college and not cohesive at all.
So making this apartment a true home is teaching me about faith. Specifically the fruits of the spirit: Patience and Self Control. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. - Galatians 5:22-23
Truly good things don't happen over night. I may have to sit on a beach chair for now. Some items might not have perfectly organized homes yet. My walls may be a little bit bare. My feet might be cold on the bare floor in the bathroom. But when I practice patience and a little bit of self control with my spending - I will be able to save up for the things that I dream will be in this space.
Just like with our faith. We might not get answers from prayers right away. When we practice patience and self control - we trust that following Jesus is going to be so so worth it in the end.
So little by little, I will continue to do the work in my apartment and in my life to stay true to this path that is laid before me.
How is your every day life teaching you faith lessons today?

Happy Things
In light of Monday's post I wanted to create a fun list of all things that make me happy. We are all so beautiful and so unique. Everyone was created for a different purpose; that is to live your own best life. Not anyone else's.
So perfection stemming from comparison doesn't get us to the place of happiness or living well. I find that when I am in a place of want want want I need to shift my mindset and think about what I have, what I love, and what truly makes me happy. So here it is in no particular order; my happy list:
Puppy tail wags and sloppy kisses
Savoring a delicious meal that you dream about for days after
Completing a tough workout and feeling so strong after
Coffee
Journaling in the early mornings
Long walks with friends [and Finn]
Popcorn and M&M's at the movies
A gorgeous sunset
Running a race
Standing in front of a vast view [mountains or beach] that creates wonder and awe and that feeling of being small
Feeling creative and inspired
An outfit, make up, and hair that makes you feel like you can take on the world
Completing a tough project
Wine & Cheese
The look on a child's face when they learn something new and do it all by themselves
Lovely conversations with girlfriends
Traveling to a new place and truly getting to explore
Learning about people; their stories, their culture, their daily life
Creating something delicious in the kitchen while drinking wine and chatting about life with my man
Being engrossed in a really good book
Getting something at a really good price [clothes, furniture, fun items] I love a deal!
A beautiful yoga practice
Green plants making living spaces warm, homey, and beautiful
Laughing until you cry
I could probably sit here all day and brainstorm more and more happy things. Once you start thinking of one more pop in your head - it's a really great practice to lift your spirits and help you realize living your best life means doing more of what makes you happy. I intend to incorporate more of my list above into my daily routine to continue to strive for health and happiness!
What are some things that make you happy?

Moving Tips and Tricks
Tomorrow is another moving day for me!
Mom and I counted the other day. I have moved 10 times in the past 9 years of my life. We counted those 10 as the times I have fully and completely packed up all my things, loaded into a truck or van, and had to unpack in a completely different place. No wonder my dog started to get super anxious any time I pack for even something as simple as going over to my parents house for the evening. I am really hoping we love this new place and stay put for a little while. My plan is to stay put until we are ready to buy a house. I also know the saying "the way to make God laugh is to make plans" holds so much truth in my life.
With all of those moves under my belt; I have learned a few things along the way to help make transitions a little easier and run smoothly.
Don't take everything. I know it sounds crazy but a move is a fresh start. Take some time to really go through your things, organize, and evaluate whether you have used something in a while. If it doesn't serve a purpose any longer or it has been collecting dust under the bed the whole time you have been in this place - maybe it's time to find a new home. I always have three piles going during packing; one for goodwill, one for trash, and one that will go with me to my new place.
Trash bags + Clothes = Besties. I learned this trick a while ago and it has saved me so much hassle. Instead of taking all your clothes off hangers folding them, packing them up, then having to unpack once you get to your new place - cut a hole in the bottom of the trash bag [big black kitchen size with drawstrings] and drape them over the hangers then close the drawstring at the bottom of your clothes. You can just take the hangers and hang them up in the new closet! Bonus the trash bags will protect your clothes from getting messed up during the move.
Start with things you don't use. I go around my house and think of it like layers. I will collect all the decor items or things that don't serve much interaction function first, put them in a central location pack them up. Then I go to closet spaces. What season are you moving in? Summer? Great you don't need your winter stuff. Pull out everything in storage spaces - organize it - then into boxes it goes! Keep peeling through the layers day by day until you are a few days before your move and you can slim down kitchen items, etc. Think about it realistically - I mean I love my crockpot as much as anyone but I am not about to slow cook some brisket 2 days before I move - we have been eating whole foods hot bar for a few days instead. So keep one or two plates and utensils out, maybe one pan for cooking, and everything else can get packed up!
Pack an overnight bag or box. This is a life saver!! I used to want to get into a new place unpack everything and have it all decorated perfect the same day. Then I realized I was projecting my incredible anxiety onto my loved ones who sacrificed their time and energy to help me. Instead, I am going to pack a weekend bag for myself. It will include things I use daily like face wash and toothbrush, a few changes of clothes, and of course my beloved coffee pot and coffee because duh. So now once my furniture is set and the necessities for night one unpacked I will be able to go out and celebrate and treat my friends and family for helping! Plus, now I know it won't all be perfect overnight and I am excited to slowly go through my new place, decorate it, and make it feel truly like home, but that's for me to do.
Have a friend [or your parents] keep your dog day of. Finn hates to be confined. HATES it. As much as I love my pup, he doesn't need to be in the way or locked up while the door needs to stay wide open for moving boxes and furniture. He will spend the day at my parents house relaxing and will come over once we are settled in and he can sniff out the new place in peace. Don't stress your pups out and have them tear up your bathroom floors in the process [true story]
Don't forget to change your address. If you are like me. Amazon is your bestie. You want all your fun packages to get to you when you move. Change your address for the postal service but also all your information. Bank. License. Amazon. BarkBox. etc... You can mail out a cute e-card to friends and family too once you have moved letting them know where you are! Don't want those wedding invitations to get lost either!
Keep healthy snacks accessible. Moving day is always a huge production. For some reason I never eat day of. I am always so busy loading boxes and doing heavy lifting, plus everything else has been packed up. It's not healthy. Moving is hard work for your body and you need fuel. Keep a bunch of protein bars out on a counter so that anyone can grab them when they feel like they need to re-charge a bit. Your body and friends will thank you.
What are some moving tips and tricks that have helped you stay sane during moving?

Location: Avon, North Carolina [Outer Banks]
Outfit Details: 3/4 sleeve top [Ivy & Leo; use the code AMANDA10 for 10% off your online purchases] | Jean Shorts [Target: old]
I am linking up with Anne and Stephanie to share more of what I am currently up to.
documenting: Life through my camera lens. I love having a creative outlet and find that once I have one idea so many more come. I am saving up for a DSLR so my passion can really take off.
accomplishing: Lots and lots of packings and organizing happening here. Since I was on vacation I really only have about a week to pack up the whole apartment! Talk about a time crunch.
enjoying: The long summer days full of sunlight. I feel like I have so much time to do all the things I want to. My days are spent at the pool, spending lots of quality time with my pup, and finding new adventures around Charlotte.
reading: Real talk. I love to read. I also have to force myself not to read so that I don't become so engrossed in the book world that I don't live in my own. So sadly because of packing all the time I haven't had a chance to get to the library. Once I settle I am going to get some fun books to read by the pool, any recommendations?
spending: My time packing and dreaming of decorating the new place. I have so many fun ideas. I have been itching to get out of the place that I am in for a while now and it seems so surreal that it's finally here!

Letter to My College Self
Dear College Amanda and all those heading to college at the end of summer,
It's been five years since you graduated undergrad and a full year now away from graduate school. I have had some time to reflect on those times. I have learned many lessons along the way. While I don't regret anything because I truly believe that everything happens for a reason, there are definitely some things that I learned and wish I would have done differently.
Create a budget & stick to it. Or better yet save money in an account that you block access from. Paying off loans is no fun. Plus once you graduate your car is going to break and you will have to buy a new one so add another monthly payment. Rent anywhere else besides your college town is crazy expensive. Have fun but be mindful and disciplined with your money. I think this past year was the year that it really clicked for me, but I wish it were 7 years ago!
Go out with your friends. Taco Tuesday. Thursday night events. Saturday afternoon adventures and tailgates. Practice good time management and spend some daytime in the library to get your work done. This is the time in your life that you will be closest to people. Don't skip being around them, say yes to things with people. The moments with friends will become your most cherished memories.
Learn to meal plan. Fast food is not your friend. Prep food with some lovely fresh and healthy ingredients, your body will thank you.
Do what makes you happy. This lesson is the one I really wish I would have taken more advantage of. I had a weird complex that I built up in college that revolved around other people and what they thought. It's a difficult thing to break. I am still finding myself and what I love but I wish I would have jumped at more opportunities that my college campus offered that peaked my interest. Who knows if you try something that makes you happy and go alone you might meet some really great friends.
Be open. This is kind of a continuation of the previous. Colleges are constantly having events and opportunities. Go. Try something new. Don't judge before you try. These years are so formative, so be open to learning new things and trying something different.
Don't cling to people who don't bring positivity to your life. I spent a lot of time on people who didn't serve me well. I kept trying to make things work in various friendships and relationships and unfortunately suffered a lot from it. I lost big pieces of myself in other people. You will always find new people so don't be afraid to walk away from something that is bringing you down.
Go to church. Better yet get involved with a campus Christian group. Jesus is number one. Spend time with Him & like minded people. Those will be the true friendships.
Journal. Writing is the one way that you truly figure out what you are thinking and feeling. Invest in yourself. Go to a fun coffee shop, bring your journal, sip a latte and reflect on this once in a life time experience.
Ask questions. This is your time to learn. Don't be afraid to admit that you don't know something. Try out various jobs and internships. Learn learn learn and soak it all up.
Explore where you live. Your college town is so much more than your campus. There are actually people that live and work there year round. They matter too. Support local. Learn about the towns history & people. You will miss that life when you are gone.
Choose your girlfriends over that boy. Seriously. He isn't worth it. If you don't think you are good enough to ever find someone; stop that negative self talk right now! You will find a fantastic guy. BUT first you need to love yourself and spend time with your girls. Boys will always come and go but if you choose them over your friends slowly the most cherished girlfriends will fade too.
Make sense of money. Do your research. Set some life and financial goals. Remind yourself of those financial goals often, especially when debating spending some cash on something silly. Invest in quality and your future.
Make the most of it. College is seriously unlike anything else. It's difficult and challenging sure but it's also so much fun. Be brave. Take risks. Be present and enjoy this special time in your life.
What would you tell your college self?
